Seoul is a beautiful and ultra-modern city and is now considered one of the biggest cities in world. The Seoul National Capital Area is the most buzzing area of the city and almost half of the populace of South Korea resides here. The Hangang River flows through the city dividing it into two parts, which are Gangbuk and Gangnam. The word Seoul comes from the ancient word called “Seorabeol” or “Seobeol” which means the capital. The Seoul Metropolitan Council takes care of the administration of the city and this city has a mayor and three vice-mayors.

Seoul is not just the mere political capital of South Korea but is also its main commercial and cultural hub. This maintains a very fast lifestyle and the standard of living is also very high. It is considered as one of the most expensive cities in the world and Asia. Seoul is also a growing tourist destination on Asia and it fascinates all with its vibrant nightlife and colorful culture. There are some great places to visit in Seoul like museums, historical monuments, temples, parks and many more. The city of Seoul also has some great restaurants where not only Korean food but also all kinds of international cuisines are available. Shopping can be another interesting activity in Seoul as this city has some great markets like Dongdaemun Market, Namdaemun Market and Myeongdong. Climate

Seoul experiences a temperate kind of climate with hot and humid summers and dry and cold winters. In June and July there is maximum rainfall in Seoul as it is the monsoon season. Though the winters are generally dry, there is considerable amount of snowfall and the temperature can drop to -7 degree Celsius during this period. The best seasons to be in Seoul is the spring and the autumn as the weather in pleasant.

The city of Seoul has a lot to offer to its visitors. The city is culturally very rich and also is home to some great historical monuments.

Museums and galleries in Seoul
There are some great museums in Seoul like National Folk Museum, War Memorial, Art Sonje Center, Kumho Museum of Art, Sun Gallery, Gallery Hyundai, Gallery Artside, Galerie Bhak and Sejong Center for the Performing Arts.

Theaters in Seoul
There are a number of theatres in Seoul as performing arts are very popular in Seoul. Some of the theaters in Seoul are Nanta Theater, Seoul Art Center, LG Arts Center, Chongdong Theater, National Theater of Korea and the National Center for Korean Traditional Performing Arts.

Landmarks of Seoul
There are some great historical monuments in Seoul and it is home to five grand palaces, which are Changdeokgung, Changgyonggung, Deoksugung, Gyeongbokgung and Gyeonghuigung. There are also some great temples in Seoul like Jongmyo, Dongmyo, Munmyo, Jogyesa, Hwagyesa and Bongeunsa. Another most significant modern attraction in the city of Seoul is the Lotte World. It is an extraordinary place with a indoor park, amusement park, hotels, museum ad shopping malls.

Seoul has six large parks, the biggest among which is the Seoul Forest. These are made to clean the environment pure and clean.

More the extraordinary structures, which represent modern Seoul and attract visitors, are COEX building, N Seoul Tower, Star Tower and LG Twin Tower.

Accommodations

The accommodations in Seoul are not only expensive and state of the art hotels but this city has various types of inexpensive accommodations. It is possible to get some rooms at a very cheap rate but the only problem with them is that these are not located in the center of the city. However, the transportation system of Seoul is very good so it will not be a problem. There are also quite a few youth hostels in Seoul where one can stay. Some of the most popular hotels in Seoul are COEX InterContinental Seoul, Paradise Hotel, Grand Hilton Seoul and Central Hotel.

Eating Out

Seoul is a cosmopolitan city and one of the biggest cities in Asia. As people from all nationalities visit this city, various types of cuisine are available here. There are some big restaurants selling all kinds of international food and also wagons on the street selling some delectable oriental cuisine. Some great Korean dishes, which have to be tasted while in Seoul, are ‘gimbap’, ‘bulgogi’ and ‘bibimbab’. However, Seoul can pose some challenges for vegetarians, as the restaurants here do not serve vegetarian food. It is possible to have a descent meal in Seoul for 25 won and for very fancy dining one has to spend about 100 won or more than that for a person.

Getting Around

Getting Around in Seoul is not very easy as this is a huge city but the city authority has made efforts to provide multiple types of transportations to the people. The signs on the roads of Seoul are written both in Korean and in English so it would not be difficult for a foreigner. Seoul has one of the most efficient and busiest subway systems in the world. There are two types of taxis, which are available on the roads of Seoul, one is general and another is deluxe. Though taxis are fast and comfortable it is very expensive in comparison to buses and subways. Seoul City Pass and Pass Plus can be used to travel around the city. In 2004, the Seoul city bus system was modernized and made more well-organized. It is possible to drive a car or a motorbike in case you have a proper driving license but it has to be remembered that the traffic is pretty wild in Seoul. 

Getting There

Seoul, the capital of South Korea is well connected internationally by various flights. The Korean Airlines and Asiana airlines has regular flights from and to this city regularly. Some other airlines, which also have direct flights to the capital of South Korea, are Lufthansa, Cathay pacific, Quantas and Japan Airlines. The main airport of Seoul is the Incheon International Airport. All parts of Korea are very well connected to the capital by road and Long Distance Express Buses run on it in a regular basis. Seoul can be reached via train from all parts of the country at a very cheap rate.

Shopping

Seoul is a city for people who love to shop. There are a number of markets and shopping malls in this city. The areas, which are well known shopping destinations are Myong-dong, Namdaemun Market, Insa-Dong, Tongdaemun Market, Hwanghak-dong Flea Market, It’aewon and Shinch’on. In the Myong –dong area there are four big departmental stores which can be visited by the foreigners as the stuffs there speak English and Japanese. The markets like Namdaemun, Tongdaemun and It’aewon are perfect for shoppers who can bargain well. Mostly local people visit these markets where it is possible to get almost everything from clothes to jewelry, from silks to shoes. Shoppers interested in antique goods should make it a point to visit the Chang-anp'yong Antique Market. In Sinch’on, it is possible to get clothes of latest fashions and is mostly flocked by the young generation.

Nightlife

Seoul has an exuberant nightlife mostly because of the significant western influence on this city. There are bars and discos is all the major hotels apart from those some of the major hotels in Seoul are Club garden, Hoopers Club and M2 Club. During the summer months, it is nice spend the evening in the local pochangmacha which are small open air places serving beverages located on the sidewalks. There are a number of karaoke bars in Seoul as the Korean love signing. For a different kind of nightlife, one can go to the tearooms of the cafes and interact with the local people. Casinos are another trendy pastime of the people of Seoul and the visitors and this industry is growing day by day and evolving as a major pass time after sun down.
